Signs of Laughter and Contradiction

Renée Gadsden (2004). Trans: Internet Journal for Cultural Sciences.

Commonalities between the antisemitic caricatures produced in Der Stürmer and caricatures relating to Israel and Jews in Arab, Soviet and Western media since the 1960s are explored. As well as providing visual examples, the author considers the stereotypes, libels and themes alluded to, and the function of political caricatures as a visual media. The article is based on an exhibition the author created for the European Forum Alpbach 2003 entitled "Vom Stürmer gelernt? Politische Karikaturen gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts" (Learned from the Stürmer? Political Caricature at the End of the 20th Century).
